Once each year, when schedules allow for it and I convince my wife to watch the kids, I return to a wooded spot near the Rapid River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. All of my friends from college make the trip as well, and we spend the entire weekend fishing in trout streams, hiking through the forest and shooting the bull. I’ve always been the most responsible member in the group, and it’s no surprise that everyone relies on me to bring crucial supplies.
Before setting off on the journey, I pack my SUV to the gills with tents, sleeping bags, a portable charcoal grill and wooden hiking sticks for long jaunts into the wilderness. The chairs are especially important as we need them to take part in our favorite wilderness pastime – playing games of euchre well into the night. As long as someone else remembers to bring a card table and a cooler full of cold beverages this year, we’ll be all set.
